History of Hamlet Mutual Insurance Company

 Chartered October 13th 1875

Hamlet Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company was founded in 1875 by a group of farmers at the Hamlet Hall in Hamlet, Illinois.  Several of the original founders have family members on the board of Hamlet Mutual Insurance Company today.

The company was chartered under Illinois laws and approved by the Illinois Sate Auditor to write farm and residential property in six townships of Mercer and Rock Island County.  As a mutual, the company is owned by the policy holders, who elect a board of directors that are responsible for the operation of the company.

Management of the company has been in the Ketzle family since 1878.  Current manager Ann Jahn is only the sixth company manager in 132 years of operation.

Today Hamlet Mutual Insurance Company writes insurance in seven counties from the home office in Reynolds, Illinois.  The modern office was built in 1979 and expanded in 1996 to its current size.  The company writes a full line of farm and home insurance coverages with our reinsurer, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company.

The company operates with a staff of six, including management and adjusting personnel.  The business is written by four full time in-house agents.

The company is rooted in tradition and backed by local management whose goal is to maintain the tradition of excellent coverage, service and prompt settlement of claims.
